Things to do near the Eden Project — the complete Cornwall day trip guide

The Eden Project is one of the UK’s most visited attractions — and rightly so. But if you’re planning a trip, you’ll quickly discover that the area around it is packed with things to see and do. St Austell and the surrounding coast offer some of Cornwall’s best beaches, gardens, harbours, and walking routes, all within a short drive.

Here’s our guide to the best things to do near the Eden Project, whether you’re spending a day, a weekend, or a full week in the area.

The Eden Project itself

Start with the headline act. The Eden Project sits in a former china clay pit just outside St Austell and houses two enormous biomes — the Rainforest Biome and the Mediterranean Biome — alongside acres of outdoor gardens. It’s genuinely spectacular in any season, and there’s always something new to see. Allow at least half a day, ideally a full day.

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas on a lead, so no need to leave them behind.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Just 20 minutes from the Eden Project, Heligan is one of Cornwall’s most loved gardens — 200 acres of restored Victorian pleasure grounds, productive gardens, and ancient woodland. The Jungle walk alone is worth the trip. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout, making it a perfect full-day outing for families and dog owners.

Charlestown harbour

Five minutes from Baybreeze, Charlestown is one of Cornwall’s most photographed spots — a perfectly preserved Georgian copper and china clay port that doubles as a film location (it’s appeared in Poldark, among others). Walk the harbour walls, browse the independent shops, grab lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants, and soak up the atmosphere. It’s especially beautiful in the evening.

Mevagissey

A 20-minute drive from St Austell, Mevagissey is a working fishing village with a double harbour, narrow streets, and some of the best fish and chips in Cornwall. The World of Model Railways museum is worth a visit if you’re travelling with children. Dogs are welcome in many of the pubs and cafés.

Fowey

Around 25 minutes from Baybreeze, Fowey is one of Cornwall’s most charming estuary towns — a maze of steep streets tumbling down to the water, with excellent restaurants, independent bookshops, and a strong literary heritage as the home of Daphne du Maurier. Take the passenger ferry across the estuary to Polruan for a spectacular view back over the town.

Carlyon Bay and Crinnis Beach

If you want a beach day close to the Eden Project, Carlyon Bay and Crinnis Beach are your best options. A wide sandy beach with easy parking, it’s just 10 minutes from St Austell. Dogs are welcome outside the summer peak season. The cliff-top walk between Carlyon Bay and Duporth is one of the area’s hidden gems.

The Pentewan Trail

A flat, traffic-free trail running from St Austell down to Pentewan beach through the Pentewan Valley. It’s ideal for cycling, walking, and running — and one of the most accessible routes in the area for families with young children or older dogs. Bike hire is available in St Austell if you need it.

Newquay and the north coast

For those who want big surf beaches, Newquay is around 35 minutes from St Austell. Fistral Beach is the UK’s most famous surf beach, and there are surf schools operating throughout the season. Watergate Bay, a few miles further north, is stunning and slightly less busy.

How to make the most of your stay

St Austell is the ideal base for exploring this part of Cornwall. You’re close enough to the Eden Project, Heligan, Charlestown, Mevagissey, and Fowey to do them all without long drives — but far enough from the tourist hotspots to enjoy a quieter, more relaxed pace.

A week here will barely scratch the surface. Most guests leave already planning their return.
